Ten years ago today

Wednesday 5th July 2006

Now, I never said these posts about past diary entries would be exciting, read on...

"It was another really hot day, I didn't wear my sweat shirt all day."

Worthy of note. My secondary school uniform was really basic, no blazers or ties to be seen, just a jumper and a white shirt.

"We had a lovely salady tea. I washed my hair and did some of my science coursework."

Salady tea is always a good tea. By 'tea' I mean dinner, our evening meal. I'm Northern okay?

For some weird reason I nearly always write in my diary when I've washed my hair. People have always asked what I write in my diary and it's this kind of riveting content.

Science coursework, homework, HA, remember that?! I was in Year 10 at this point so I had exams to revise for and coursework to hand in. I hated revising, hated it. I never really found a way that worked for me but I managed to pass all my exams so it turned out fine in the end.

Ten years ago today - 30th June 2006

Ten years ago I was 15, and at a very small secondary school. For the purposes of not giving my entire life away, I'm going to discount people's names and just use X Y and Z.

Friday 30th June 2006

"The bus came very early and I was running and shouting at the boys to stick their hand out and get on the bus! lol".

Yes I wrote 'lol' in my diary. 'The boys' are my two younger brothers whom I caught the bus to and from school with every day. It cost us each 40p to get to school, now it probably costs £3.80.

"My hair was really nice and curly :) X got on the bus and her hair is really blonde!!"

Yay for good hair days! I have no idea who X was but her hair being blonde must have been a surprise.

"EWW Y WAS SMOKEINGLY. I think I already did [know that] but it was abit surreal to see."

Not a typo there, for some reason I'd spelt smoking like that. See previous post for how bad my spelling started off! I hate smoking, I think its gross and to see my friend doing it obviously made me recoil in horror, through the medium of my diary.

"I went on the Sims 2, chatted, watched Corrie."

Rock 'n' roll. A very straight laced teenager was I. I loved playing on the Sims 2, it used to take about 20 minutes to start up on my desktop computer then I'd play it for hours. 'Chatted' meant I was talking to my friends on MSN Messenger, a now defunct online messenger. This Buzzfeed article quite nicely rounds up the days of MSN.

Welcome!

Hello! Welcome to my blog - What I Did 10 Years Ago. The best ideas come to you late at night, right? Just as I was falling asleep I had a light bulb moment about what I could do with 16 years worth of diary entries. Why don't I blog snippets of my personal diary from 10 years ago? Sometimes we can even stretch back to 15 years ago! I'm hoping the results will be fun and reflective, with huge dollops of cringe.

I should introduce myself, my name is Cressida, I'm 25 and I live in Manchester. I first began writing a diary, aged eight, on the 17th April 1999. NINETEEN NINETY NINE. Blimey I'm old. In 1999, the minimum hourly wage for workers aged 21 and over was £3.60 and Bluetooth was first introduced to the masses.

Let's begin with my first ever entry, I thought it would be nice to show you the whole thing. This was written in a yellow foam notepad with Winnie the Pooh on the front. I don't think I was old enough to write in pen -

'Aalfabet Zoo' was an indoor soft play centre where anyone who was anyone had their birthday parties at. One time I ate a full box of Nerds in the ball pool. I'm pleased I conquered my fear by going on the big slide three times, go me! To go on the slide you had to sit in a sack and shuffle to the edge of basically a sheer drop, the kind that makes your tummy feel like it's rushed in to your mouth. This whole place was manned by 17 year olds in scrunchies. The drawing is a fairly accurate portrayal of what Alphabet Zoo looked like, not sure why I illustrated diary entries but I was eight, so what else was I going to do?

As if clear, I've never been great at spelling but I like how I documented getting two 'necklesars', perhaps this was the start of my love of necklaces, I have gazillions!

I have to admit, my handwriting hasn't really improved.
